If you are on Windows 10 or newer and want to experience Limbo of the Lost, but the game keeps crashing, then you should consider running the game in a Windows XP virtual machine.
Setting up a WinXP virtual machine[]
- Download VMWare Workstation Player and install it: https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/ws/17.5.2/23775571/windows/
- Acquire a Windows XP ISO, such as from here: https://archive.org/details/WinXPProSP3x86
- Open VMWare Workstation Player and click "Create a New Virtual Machine".
- Select "Installer disc image file (iso)" and then the WinXP ISO. Click Next.
- Input the serial key (it's on the page you got the ISO from), then click Next.
- If you want, you can change the folder in which the virtual machine will be created.
- Keep clicking Next until you reach the part where the "Customize Hardware" button is present. Click it and change "Memory for this virtual machine" to 2048 or higher. Then click Close.
- Click Finish and wait until the setup finishes.
- Download Limbo of the Lost ISO. There are two available options, either the European version (the most common), or the North American version (slightly more functional).
- In VMWare Workstation Player, go to VM > Removable Devices > CD/DVD > Settings, and in "Use ISO Image File" select the LOTL ISO.
- You can now open the game's CD within WinXP and install the game. The game's serial key should be on the page you got the ISO from.
Troubleshooting[]
"3D acceleration required" error[]
If you get this error while trying to run the game on a Windows XP virtual machine, you will need to download the VMware tools, since the Workstation doesn't come with them in a version that works with XP. These tools can be found here: https://packages.vmware.com/tools/releases/10.0.12/windows/
Download the ISO and open it in your XP virtual machine, similarly to how you opened LOTL through the disc drive. The tools have to be the 10.0.12 version, as later versions don't work with XP.
It is not advised to use systems older than Windows XP, since e.g. Windows 98 in a virtual machine does not support 3D (which the game requires for some reason), meaning that the game will not work on it.
Slowdowns and/or framerate drops[]
In order for the game to run well, you need to set the VM to use 2GB RAM or higher. If the game is having serious slowdowns, then you forgot to do step 7! You can still change that by editing the settings of the WinXP VM you set up.
Additional notes[]
- To leave the virtual machine's window, you must use CTRL+ALT instead of ALT+TAB.
